The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of King Uzziah of Judah and in the days of King Jeroboam son of Joash of Israel, two years[a] before the earthquake.(A)

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

And he said:

The Lord roars from Zion
    and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds wither,
and the top of Carmel dries up.(B)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Damascus,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[b]
because they have threshed Gilead
    with threshing sledges of iron.(C)
So I will send a fire on the house of Hazael,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.(D)
I will break the gate bars of Damascus
and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of Aven
and the one who holds the scepter from Beth-eden,
and the people of Aram shall go into exile to Kir,
            says the Lord.(E)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Gaza,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[c]
because they carried into exile entire communities,
to hand them over to Edom.(F)
So I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza,
and it shall devour its strongholds.
I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod
    and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,
            says the Lord God.(G)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Tyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[d]
because they delivered entire communities over to Edom
and did not remember the covenant of kinship.(H)
10 So I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre,
and it shall devour its strongholds.(I)

11 Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Edom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[e]
because he pursued his brother with the sword
    and cast off all pity;
he maintained his anger perpetually[f]
    and kept his wrath[g] forever.(J)
12 So I will send a fire on Teman,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Bozrah.(K)

13 Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of the Ammonites,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[h]
because they have ripped open pregnant women in Gilead
in order to enlarge their territory.(L)
14 So I will kindle a fire against the wall of Rabbah,
and it shall devour its strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
with a storm on the day of the whirlwind;(M)
15 then their king shall go into exile,
    he and his officials together,
            says the Lord.(N)

The Law and the Prophets

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.(A) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter,[a] not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.(B) 19 Therefore, whoever breaks[b] one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.(C) 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Concerning Anger

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder,’ and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’(D) 22 But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister,[c] you will be liable to judgment, and if you insult[d] a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council, and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell[e] of fire.(E) 23 So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,(F) 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court[f] with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.(G) 26 Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Concerning Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’(H) 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(I) 29 If your right eye causes you to sin,[g] tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.[h](J) 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin,[i] cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.[j]

Concerning Divorce

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’(K) 32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Concerning Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’(L) 34 But I say to you: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,(M) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.[k]

Concerning Retaliation

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’(N) 39 But I say to you: Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also,(O) 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, give your coat as well, 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to the one who asks of you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.(P)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’(Q) 44 But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(R) 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.(S) 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(T)

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Moab,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[a]
because he burned to lime
the bones of the king of Edom.(A)
So I will send a fire on Moab,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Kerioth,
and Moab shall die amid uproar,
amid shouting and the sound of the trumpet;(B)
I will cut off the ruler from its midst
and will kill all its officials with him,
            says the Lord.(C)

Judgment on Judah

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Judah,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[b]
because they have rejected the instruction of the Lord
and have not kept his statutes,
but they have been led astray by the same lies
    after which their ancestors walked.(D)
So I will send a fire on Judah,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.(E)

Judgment on Israel

Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[c]
because they sell the righteous for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals—(F)
they who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth
    and push the afflicted out of the way;
father and son go in to the same young woman,
so that my holy name is profaned;(G)
they lay themselves down beside every altar
    on garments taken in pledge;
and in the house of their God they drink
wine bought with fines they imposed.(H)

Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them,
whose height was like the height of cedars
    and who was as strong as oaks;
I destroyed his fruit above
    and his roots beneath.(I)
10 Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt
and led you forty years in the wilderness,
to possess the land of the Amorite.(J)
11 And I raised up some of your children to be prophets
and some of your youths to be nazirites.
Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?
            says the Lord.(K)

12 But you made the nazirites drink wine
    and commanded the prophets,
    saying, “You shall not prophesy.”(L)

13 So, I will press you down in your place,
just as a cart presses down
when it is full of sheaves.[d](M)
14 Flight shall perish from the swift,
and the strong shall not retain their strength,
nor shall the mighty save their lives;(N)
15 those who handle the bow shall not stand,
and those who are swift of foot shall not save themselves,
nor shall those who ride horses save their lives;(O)
16 and those who are stout of heart among the mighty
shall flee away naked on that day,
            says the Lord.(P)

A Life Pleasing to God

Finally, brothers and sisters, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God (as, in fact, you are doing), you should do so more and more.(A) For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality;(B) that each one of you know how to control your own body[a] in holiness and honor, not with lustful passion, like the gentiles who do not know God; that no one wrong or exploit a brother or sister in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we have already told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.(C) For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. Therefore whoever rejects this rejects not human authority but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,(D) 10 and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, 11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you,(E) 12 so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.(F)
